Four call-outs in one day on busy long weekend
It's already been a busy Labour Day weekend for Lions Bay Search and Rescue (LBSAR), and it isn't over yet. Sunday saw bumper-to-bumper traffic heading north on the Sea to Sky, and here in the village, a record four SAR call-outs in one day.
SAR Manager Ed Langford said that rescue efforts were also hampered by the crowded parking lot at Lions Bay School, where vehicles blocked access to a rescue container.
The first call of the day was for a hiker with a twisted ankle on the Howe Sound Crest trail. The second involved a 69 year old hiker in the same area who was suffering heat stroke.
Heat stroke was also the problem for the third rescue, with a hiker who was vomiting and dehydrated when located by the ground crew on the trail leading up to the Lions.
The final rescue was for a hiker with a twisted ankle on the logging road above the Sunset gate.
"It seems people are underestimating the length and physical requirements of the hikes," said Langford. He added that today's heat compounded the already demanding conditions that hikers encounter in the back country.
LBSAR provides these rescue services without question or charge. Donations to help replace LBSAR equipment and gear can be made HERE.
