Watershed reaches publishing milestone

A thousand articles.

This one, of course, bumps us up to 1001. The Watershed's first article was published January 2, 2023, and in the nearly five years since then, we've been sharing all the news that matters to residents of Lions Bay and the Sea to Sky corridor.

We'd just like to take a moment to thank you, our readers, and especially those of you who subscribe to this publication. Your support, both moral and financial, helps keep this small publication — and independent journalism — alive and kicking.

And while we'd like to spend some time celebrating, there happens to be two elections to cover at the moment. Time to get back to work.

So happy reading! And if you have considered subscribing but not yet made the leap, take a look back through our archive. It has always been our goal to offer news in a timely fashion, using verifiable and trustworthy sources, and to encourage discussion in Lions Bay and beyond. Your contribution can help keep that happening — an ensure our community remains vibrant and well-informed.

The Watershed welcomes your thoughts.

We left the Facebook cesspool in February after reading “Careless People”by Sarah Wynn Williams and have found it so refreshing to read unbiased reports of Council meetings etc.

Originally Facebook was supposed to bring people together, but it has had the opposite effect in Lions Bay, where malicious sniping between the various groups has contributed to tearing the Village apart.

Thanks Karen for all the time you have put into giving us an honest voice of reason .

I so admire what you’ve done with the Watershed. I also think there’s a whole level of investigative journalism that’s still needed In our village. The “cesspools” as Doug calls them exist in part because there’s no one shining a spotlight on some of the more troubling stories in our community. People talk around these things because there’s no 4th or 5th estate doing the real reporting/digging.

Here are a few that I can think of:

  • The current lawsuit related to the treatment of village staff - how much do we know and what is at stake?

  • The village’s mounting legal bills and a timeline of what exactly has contributed to them

  • The shrinking size of the student population in…

The Watershed has made an immeasurable contribution to life in Lions Bay.

Without this publication, we could be depending on sources such as the Facebook cesspool for information about our community.

Thank you Karen for your dedication!
