Nature Lions Bay teams up with BC Nature

Nature Lions Bay is thrilled to announce the society is now a member club of BC Nature.

BC Nature, a registered charity, acts as a federation of organizations throughout BC, giving them a collective voice on conservation and environmental issues to foster awareness, appreciation and understanding of nature and to advocate for the sustainable use of natural spaces so that they are maintained for future generations.

This means Nature Lions Bay members will also become members of BC Nature with all the additional benefits. Along with local news, events and initiatives, members will receive BCnature Magazine and their “Nature’s Voice” e-newsletter and have access to other member clubs’ field trips, webinars, events and conservation initiatives around BC.

Anyone interested in working towards supporting ecosystem health in Lions Bay is welcome to join Nature Lions Bay.

In 2023, Nature Lions Bay Conservation Society evolved from the longstanding Native Plant Garden Association, expanding the society’s focus to promote an interest in the importance of maintaining and restoring all elements of native biodiversity and nature conservation in Lions Bay.

A particular emphasis is to offer a collaborative umbrella group for independent nature partners in Lions Bay and support initiatives that in turn support the Society’s goals. This includes opportunities to apply for grants available to non-profits in partnership with Nature Lions Bay. The BC Nature relationship also means tax receipts can be issued by them to donors.

Current nature partners include Bird Friendly, Bear Smart, The Trailblazers and the Butterflyway Project, but the hope is other groups will be created in the future. For example, there is potential for a group focused on supporting the local bat population.

Anyone is welcome to participate in any of the activities these groups provide as always. However, events and activities on a wider range of topics are planned for members.

“If you are interested in helping nature, this is an ideal group to join,” said Val Morton, Vice President of Nature Lions Bay. “You can participate as much or as little as you wish, you will learn a great deal about Pacific Northwest ecosystems, you will meet lots of wonderful like-minded people, and you will have the satisfaction of knowing that you are making a positive difference.”

Deanna Mariotti, Treasurer and Membership Director, is enthusiastic about growing Nature Lions Bay. "Having moved to Lions Bay just over a year ago, it’s been wonderful joining a community so deeply committed to the environment,” she said. “Participating in local conservation efforts aligns perfectly with my personal passions, and I’m looking forward to supporting our environment through my role on the board.”

Other board members are Penny Nelson (President), Danielle Wills (Director for Projects) and Jeff Sparling (co-Treasurer).

The annual fee to join Nature Lions Bay is $25 per person or $35 for a family membership. Student memberships are also available. More information is available at naturelionsbay.ca. Enquiries can be emailed to contactus@naturelionsbay.ca.
