This week, the wee Anna's Hummingbird triumphed over 26 much larger competitors to win the status of Village Official Bird, according to the folks at Bird Friendly Lions Bay.
Voting closed on May 10th, with votes being collected on-line and manually att the Lions Bay Nature Friendly Event. With 20.6% of the vote, the Anna's buzzed past the competition to become the choice for official community bird.
Competitors were chosen from species regularly and naturally found in and around Lions Bay. While the group included an option to add other species, all of the finalists came from the initial list.
From the 26 local bird species included in the competition, the top five were the Anna's Hummingbird, Steller's Jay, Rufous Hummingbird, Barred Owl and the Spotted Towhee.
Group member Penny Nelson said that the result will be taken to Council to be ratified later in May. She noted that Bird Friendly Lions Bay offers many thanks to member and local resident Charlie Bradbury for her hard work on the community campaign.
