In emergencies, each person needs at least four litres of water per day, and Lions Bay is kicking off the new year with a gesture that’s as practical as it is symbolic.

This Saturday, January 17, the Village’s Emergency Support Services (ESS) team will host the second annual Great Lions Bay Water Giveaway — an event that has quickly become about much more than handing out water.

Born out of a need to prepare for low-water risks and other emergencies, the Water Giveaway has evolved into a moment where neighbours gather, connect, and learn how to support one another. Last year’s event saw residents swapping stories, sharing advice, and meeting the volunteers who quietly step forward when emergencies affect the community.

This year, the ESS team is building on that spirit.

Emergency preparedness isn’t just about checklists and supplies. It’s about people — knowing who your neighbours are, understanding how our village responds, and feeling confident that we can get through challenges together.

During the event, residents can pick up a free four-litre bottle of water for each member of their household and take part in conversations that introduce the ESS program. These volunteers play an important coordinating role during emergencies, helping residents access temporary supports such as shelter, food, and emotional care through community and provincial resources. ESS members were part of the response during the 2024 slide and the more recent local fire — ensuring displaced residents had what they needed in the first hours and days.

The January 17th event also invites attendees to consider joining the growing team of volunteers. No emergency background is required, just a desire to help neighbours in moments of uncertainty.

We’re hoping people walk away feeling more connected through this event. Preparedness becomes a lot less intimidating when you know you’re not doing it alone.

The Water Giveaway will take place at the Lions Bay Café from 10 a.m-4 p.m.

Residents of all ages are welcome, whether they’re picking up water, curious about emergency readiness, or simply looking for a sense of community in the winter months.
