Municipal Election Nominations Open

Lions Bay's municipal election is now in full swing, with nominations open for the positions of Mayor, Councillor and School Trustees.

This year's municipal elections will be held on Saturday, October 17.

For those interested in running for a position in the community, all local election information can be found on the Village website HERE, including a video of the prospective candidate information session held in Council chambers in August.

To run for the position of Mayor or Councillor in the Village, an individual must be:

• a Canadian citizen,

• 18 years of age or older on general voting day – October 17, 2026,

• a resident of British Columbia for at least six months immediately before the day nomination papers are filed, and

• not disqualified under the Local Government Act or any other enactment from voting in an election in British Columbia or being nominated for, being elected to or holding the office, or be otherwise disqualified by law.

Anyone running as a school trustee must meet the same requirements, with the exception that they not be disqualified under the School Act.

There are currently two candidates who have filed nomination papers: Councillor Ron McLaughlin, who will run for Mayor, and Councillor Neville Abbott who is running to retain his Council seat.

Both these candidates bring a great deal of experience to the nomination process. McLaughlin has been a Councillor for two and a half terms, and Mayor for one term. Abbott has been a Councillor for two terms.

Both candidates have held a number of volunteer positions in the Village, as well as sitting on a variety of committees.

Nomination forms will be accepted at the Village Office until September 11 at 4 p.m.

Beginning the week of September 14, The Watershed will run profiles of all prospective candidates.
