Municipal Election Slate Announced

Eight candidates vie for Councillor seat, two for Mayor.

Potential nominees for the upcoming municipal elections were required to file their papers with the Village Office by 4 p.m. on Friday, and at close of day, there were eight candidates officially in the running for a Councillor seat and two for Mayor.

Sitting Councillor Ron McLaughlin comes in with the most years of Council experience, with a term as Mayor and two and a half terms as Councillor. McLaughlin stepped forward last year when Councillor Marcus Reuter resigned from his seat, and was acclaimed to the position.

Councillor Michael Broughton will oppose McLaughlin in running for mayor. Broughton has been a sitting councillor during the current term, and also held the position of Councillor from 1976 to 1979.

Also entering the race are Councillors Neville Abbott and Jaime Cunliffe, both making a bid to retain their seats at the table. Abbott and Cunliffe have served on previous councils in addition to the current term.

New to the race are residents Leslie Nolin, Chris Stevens, Carmon Leeson, Eric Balac, Ehsan Monfared and Adam Solheim.

There are four Council seats to fill. The Mayor is Chair at the Council table and is the tie-breaking vote, should that be needed.

As with the past by-elections, The Watershed will contact each nominee with a list of questions and offer them the chance to share their platform and ideas for the new term.
