Porteau Cove fire adds to Howe Sound's smoky skies
There are currently 123 fires burning across BC, with 27 of them within the Coastal Fire Region, and more than half of those are rated as out of control.
Environment Canada has issued a Yellow Advisory for smoke across much of southern BC, including Howe Sound and the Sea to Sky.
The fire that broke out yesterday near Porteau Cove is likely contributing to the smoky skies over Lions Bay and the Sea to Sky corridor, however the good news is that it has been downgraded from 'out of control' to 'being held'. The cause of that fire has yet to be determined, but it is in an area that was subject to dozens of lightning strikes during an unusual overnight thunderstorm Thursday night and Friday morning.
Under a yellow smoke advisory, residents are cautioned to postpone or reduce outdoor activities, stay cool and drink plenty of fluids and carry any needed rescue medications at all times.
Environment Canada rated air quality in the Sea to Sky region as moderate risk on Saturday morning, and is calling for a chance of showers later in the day, with a further risk of thundershowers.
