One of the hikers rescued after a fall while hiking Mount Brunswick on Saturday has died in hospital following the incident.

A large crew from Lions Bay Search and Rescue (LBSAR) worked with North Shore Rescue (NSR) and Talon helicopters for hours on Saturday to rescue two hikers who had fallen on the return leg of a hike.

LBSAR reported that initially one hiker slid off the trail, and when the second hiker attempted a rescue, he slid more than 100 metres past the first stranded hiker, ending up lodged on the cliffside above a waterfall.

After a complicated and technically difficult rescue, the second hiker was long-lined off the mountain, and was transported to hospital with critical injuries. The LBSAR ground team managed to rescue the first hiker, and were able to escort the group down.

Maria Masiar says that she and other LBSAR team members were deeply saddened to hear of the outcome.

In a statement to The Watershed on behalf of LBSAR this morning, Masiar extended condolences to the family, friends, and loved ones of the hiker who passed away following the incident on Mount Brunswick.

"We thank all first responders for their efforts in what was a complex, difficult, and high-risk operation.

We understand that a GoFundMe has been created by the individual’s friends and family in support of his actions and to assist those impacted.

This is a deeply tragic outcome, and our thoughts are with everyone affected."
