Environment Canada issues coastal flood warning for Sunday

Environment Canada has issued a Flood Advisory for low-lying areas around the South Coast, including Lions Bay, throughout the upcoming weekend. The strongest chance of flooding is expected Sunday.
The combination of very high tides and the current low-pressure system could lead to moderate coastal flooding, according to the government agency. Current tide patterns are at a seasonal high, and the concern is that the strong winds and resultant high waves expected over the weekend could bring a risk of coastal flooding on Sunday.
Perihelion, the part of the yearly revolution where the Earth comes closest to the Sun, occurs this weekend. This astronomical condition can lead to higher tide levels around the planet. Falling atmospheric pressure also affects tidal depths, and the combination can lead to flooding along local coastlines.
The report from Environment Canada indicates that there is some uncertainty regarding the track and timing of the low-pressure system, which will ultimately affect wind speeds.
But even moderate winds combined with a storm surge can lead to erosion of coastlines and the risk of washed-up debris.
More information is available through Environment Canada, and also via the Alertable app.
