Bird Friendly Family Event on Saturday

Nature bringing community together

Come celebrate World Migratory Bird Day right here in Lions Bay on Saturday morning at the Village Hall.

This family-friendly event has something for everyone. Children can make their own suncatchers to help save birds from window strikes, build ivy nests, have their faces painted and more.  Attendees can collect answers at participating partners' displays for a chance to win prizes including a $200 spa gift voucher, a Wild Birds Unlimited gift voucher and tickets for the Sea to Sky Gondola.

World Migratory Bird Day is a global campaign celebrated twice a year in the spring and fall, and is aimed at safeguarding migratory birds as they journey across the planet.

"This event is an opportunity to learn about the efforts of Lions Bay groups including the Climate Action Committee, Butterflyway and Native Plant Garden, Bear Smart, Lions Bay Arts & Art Spark and others, along with partners from throughout Howe Sound," says organizer Penny Nelson.

There will be information about how to help protect birds in our community and make your home more bird-friendly. It's your last chance to vote on Lions Bay's official bird before the winner is announced at the event.

At noon, there is a short hike planned for those interested in a chance to view this year's eaglets in their nests. If you have binoculars, be sure to bring them, along with a camera to capture the perfect shot.

Nelson said that the event is made possible thanks to a Small Neighbourhood Grant from the West Vancouver Foundation. She also offered thanks to Lions Bay's own Red Couch Bakery, Wild Birds Unlimited, Sea to Sky Gondola, FeatherFriendly, Nature Canada and to all the volunteers who helped out.

Refreshments including coffee, treats and hotdogs will be available.

Where: Lions Bay Village Hall, 400 Centre Road, Lions Bay

When: Saturday, May 10, 9:15 -1 p.m.
