Regulations apply province-wide, except for Haida Gwaii
The BC Fire Service began a campfire ban at noon on Friday that is now in effect province-wide with the exception of Haida Gwaii, and will remain in force until further notice.
Lions Bay falls under the purview of the Coastal Fire Centre, one of six fire regulation centres in the province. All six have banned campfires as well as any open burning. This includes fireworks, sky lanterns, burn barrels, tiki torches and essentially any other open flame.
The penalties for defying the ban are steep: violation tickets are $1,150, and fines of up to $100,000 and a year in jail can be imposed upon conviction. If the contravention causes or contributes to a wildfire, the person responsible may be ordered to pay all firefighting and associated costs.
There are currently 150 active wildfires burning in BC.
On Friday, Public Works Director of Operations Karl Buhr confirmed that Fire Chief Barret Germscheid has raised the fire danger rating within the village to High.
To report a wildfire, unattended campfire, or open burning violation, use the BC Wildfire Service mobile app or call 1-800-663-5555 toll-free (or *5555 on a cellphone).
