Organizers hoping many hands will make light work

Val Morton wants your help making the Village entrance (even more) beautiful.
She and Hana Boye are hoping to corral a large group of volunteers on Sunday, April 19 to remove all the ivy around the Lions Bay sign beside the steps leading to the underpass along Lions Bay Avenue.
"It's important that the native plants that will be used in the entrance garden are planted relatively soon so they can take full advantage of the growing season," says Morton. "This also means that the English ivy and other invasive plants that are overwhelming that bank must be removed soon so the planting can begin."
The entrance beautification project is being funded by the Rogers/Mailey family and Blink49 Studios legacy donation that was made last October.
Morton and Boye are calling for volunteers to gather next Sunday at 11 a.m. and with enough hands on deck, they are hoping to clear the entire bank of invasive plants by noon. Prior to the event, Morton says the area will be carefully scanned for any ground-nesting birds in order to protect their nests.
"The entrance to the Village has been overgrown for too long," says long-time resident and Master Gardener Ingrid Wray. "But with a bit of work, we can clean it up and it will look much more welcoming."
Wray is thrilled to see some of the funding from the Mailey/Rogers family go toward beautifying the Village. "It's very generous of Victoria and her family to support this project," she says.
Morton says the project ties in nicely with her goal to see the Village entirely ‘English ivy free’, and notes that refreshments will be on hand as added incentive.
The landscaping and new Lions Bay sign installation will be completed by Ridgeline Landscapes, a Squamish company.
