May's month-long High Risk Driving Campaign netted a record number of tickets issued and vehicles impounded last weekend along the Sea to Sky.

The Squamish BC Highway Patrol (BCHP) unit spread out between Lions Bay and Mt. Currie over the Victoria Day long weekend, and as a result issued 212 violation tickets as well as a record 66 excessive speed tickets that included vehicle impounds.

“We want our highways to be a beautiful and safe drive for everyone, and we’re going to keep removing excessive speeders until people get the message," said BCHP Corporal Michael McLaughlin. He reported that at one point, there was a backlog of four Porsches and two motorcycles waiting to be towed to the impound lot.

McLaughlin said that the busiest day for speeding was Sunday, when 33 vehicles were impounded. He also noted that there were numerous drivers who were driving more than 80 km/hr over the speed limit. “That sort of excessive speeding is exactly what we commonly see at fatal highway collisions, and it’s not acceptable.”

The previous record for excessive speeding impounds on the Sea to Sky Highway was over Labour Day long weekend in 2025, when 60 vehicles were impounded.
