Question of by-election remains in the balance

The deadline for submission of nominations for candidates to run in the upcoming by-election closed on Friday, May 16 at 4 p.m., but as of press time no announcement of the candidate list has yet been made.
In an unexpected move, a special Village Update was released just before 9 a.m. on Friday morning, reminding residents of the 4 p.m. deadline, and noting that only a single candidate, former Mayor Ron McLaughlin, had put his name forward.
If another candidate did not file their nomination papers prior to the deadline, it means that the Village will acclaim McLaughlin to the role of Councillor, thereby saving the expense of a by-election.
If one or more candidates did successfully submit their nomination documents, the by-election campaign will kick off on May 24 and last until election day on June 21.
Should McLaughlin win the seat by acclamation, he could assume his new role as as soon as Council is prepared to swear him in.
Prior to Village Office closing time at 5 p.m. on Friday, there was no announcement as to other eligible candidates, and communications from The Watershed to Village Office staff and the Chief Elections Officer were not returned.
In light of the Victoria Day weekend, an announcement is not expected before Tuesday.

I would very much like to see Ron step into this role. He is familiar with the processes, the running of our village and could get to work immediately... AND an added bonus is it will save the village approx $30k, with not running a by-election!
He has my support!
