Police are asking for witnesses or drivers with dash cam footage to come forward after an incident that killed a four-year old child and critically injured his mother and her friend.

The incident occurred around 3:30 yesterday afternoon in Horseshoe Bay near the bus stop beside the ferry terminal, when a 257 TransLink Bus mounted the curb at the corner and struck the pedestrians.

In a press briefing last night, Sergeant Chris Bigland with the West Vancouver Police Department (WVPD) and Corporal Dave Noon of the Lower Mainland Integrated Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Service offered an update.

Bigland said that by the time police arrived, first responders were working to free three people who were pinned under the bus. "Despite these efforts, a four-year-old boy was sadly pronounced deceased at the scene. His mother was transported to Lions Gate Hospital in critical condition. A second woman, believed to be a family friend, was taken to the same hospital and is currently in stable condition."

WV Police, BC Ferries and TransLink have all posted public condolences after the tragic event.

Bigland said the TransLink bus driver was being interviewed by police and the vehicle involved has been seized for mechanical inspection. He noted that preliminary findings indicate that speed was not a contributing factor.

Police are asking for witnesses or anyone who may have dashcam footage of the area from around 3:30 p.m. yesterday afternoon to contact WVPD’s non-emergency line at 604-925-7300, quoting file number 25-5042.

WVPD is encouraging anyone who was involved in yesterday’s events to make use of their Victim’s Services department at 604-925-7468. Support is also available through the Mental Health Support Line at 310-6789, the Crisis Line at 1-800-784-2433 or by directly dialling 9-8-8.
