Busy Weekend Alert

Gran Fondo, LBFR Firefighter's Day on tap for Saturday

This weekend is shaping up to be a busy one, with the Gran Fondo roaring through town first thing tomorrow morning. It's the 15th annual event, and with more than 5,000 cyclists registered, it is North America's largest Gran Fondo and a true celebration of cycle-power on our mountain highway.

However, it does bring with it partial closures, meaning delays in both directions on the Sea to Sky. In a recent press release, organizers state that motorists can expect possible delays between West Vancouver and Whistler between 5:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.

"Motorists are advised to obey all traffic control personnel and be prepared to stop during this large-scale cycling event. Rolling re-openings will occur as riders pass through the course."

While both north and southbound access will remain open throughout the day, speed limits will be reduced to 60 km/h on sections of the Sea to Sky and the Upper Levels highways. Organizers suggest that motorists plan any travel well in advance, drive with caution and follow signs.

An excellent alternative to hitting the highway on Saturday is Firefighter's Day, down on the beach from 2 – 10 p.m. Kids games, barbecue, and the forecast for a sunny day in the beer garden combine to make an excellent afternoon for all members of the family. An entertaining way to show your support for our local firefighters.
