Inaugural Art Show A Brilliant Success

Howe Sound Collective celebrates creating and exploring art
The inaugural Howe Sound Collective art show was an inspiring, supportive evening and an absolute success according to artist and mentor Barb San Severino.
"It was so amazing to celebrate our individual and collective art journeys together," she said.
Last weekend, nine artists displayed their work of the past year against the stunning backdrop of Lions Bay Beach.
And for eight of the artists, it was their first show.
Celebrated local artist San Severino, whose work was also featured, has acted as a mentor to the group since they started meeting last fall.
"The collective have been meeting every Thursday from 5:30- 8:30 p.m. at the Village Hall for over a year now. We are currently on summer break, and starting back on September 10. There are between 10 and 15 participants using watercolour, acrylic, oil and even paint by number! We welcome any and all levels and skills," said San Severino.
She said that some of the artists bring their own supplies. But for those who are just beginning to try their hand at painting, acrylic paints, brushes, aprons and easels are available to use.
"It is an extremely supportive group who are bonded over their love of creating and exploring art," she says. "Many of us have found it to be the highlight of the week during the long dark winter months. Friendships have developed and skills have grown. We always welcome new faces and hope that if you’ve ever thought you’d like to dust off your art supplies or learn to paint, please join us."
Registration is through lionsbayarts.ca, and San Severino says that new participants need only bring a canvas and an idea.
In addition to displaying the work of this talented group of artists, the evening also served as a fundraiser for the Trailblazers, Lions Bay's intrepid group of volunteers who donate their time to maintaining the local trails around the Village.
San Severino donated the painting below to raffle for the cause, and it raised $500 for the Trailblazers organization. Fittingly, one of the artists in the collective, Vikki Dash, was the lucky winner.
