Popular event returns to Lions Bay

Since it began in 2022, the Bird Friendly Lions Bay event for World Migratory Bird Day has grown into a Nature Celebration that not only marks the return of our songbirds but also showcases our amazing natural heritage and local environmental initiatives.
Community groups will again share knowledge and news about local projects on Saturday May 9 at the Village Hall in a social setting that includes refreshments, a BBQ, several kids’ activities, and also plenty to engage adults.
A series of short documentaries (less than 10 minutes each) will be screened beginning at 10:30 a.m. Topics range from how to use eBird, the power of citizen science, how trees provide municipal services and more. A 'treasure hunt' style competition has great prizes on offer, including passes for the new Squamish Canyon and the Sea to Sky Gondola. There’ll be opportunities to learn how can you contribute to global research projects using Merlin, eBird and the Global Bird Collision Mapper.
This year the Butterflyway Project is taking a closer look at caterpillars, moths, butterflies and the host plants they need and will be giving away a limited number of free plants to take home.
If you’ve often found yourself wondering about what goes where for recycling purposes, the Climate Action Committee has come up with a game to test your eco-savvy, with special emphasis on items accepted at the Lions Bay Community Recycling Depot.
Exciting news from first-time participants Nature Lions Bay Conservation Society is that cameras are now in place for a new Wildlife Monitoring Project. Dr Danielle Wills, a board member and Bird Team member, will be on hand with participating students from Capilano University. The team hope to have early footage of local wildlife to share.
Another first-timer is Norma Rodgers, Chair of the Bear Smart Committee, who will be at the committee’s table to talk about Lions Bay’s favourite fur-bearers.
You may not have noticed a recent Bird Friendly Lions Bay project at the hall, and you may not notice it even when you arrive, but there’ll be plenty of information about it on the day!
A close-up look at new baby eagles never gets old, but at this time Kelvin Grove neighbours report that our Bald Eagles have not been seen on the nest for several days. Instead, there’ll be a nature walk led by the Trailblazers starting at 12.15. Binoculars will be available to borrow.
Many thanks to Lions Bay Arts, the Historical Society and other individual volunteers for making this annual event possible. Thanks also to our sponsors Wild Birds Unlimited North Vancouver, Nature Canada and Lions Bay’s own Red Couch Bakery. Lions Bay Arts is also co-sponsoring the Nature Journaling Workshop for kids.
