Help for Families on the North Shore

Community resources now available to Lions Bay residents

North Shore Community Resources (NSCR) has been helping families on the North Shore since 1976, and for the first time, they are bringing their services to Lions Bay.

On February 7, the organization is inviting local parents to bring their kids to the Village Hall for a morning of activities and light snacks, as well as a chance for parents to learn more about the resources available to them.

NSCR has offices in both North and West Vancouver, and have a long history of supporting local families by connecting them with quality childcare and other resources. They also offer services for child care providers and those looking to join the workforce, as well as a number of other programs.

The Child Care Resource and Referral program (CCRR) helps parent identify child care options that best fit their needs by providing information about licensed and registered child care providers within the local community. They help parents determine what works best for them, based on location, child’s age, hours of care required, and family preferences, as well as guidance on availability and waitlists.

"We help parents and caregivers find child care that fits their needs and understand what quality care looks like," says Maja Kocova, a CCRR consultant who works out of the West Vancouver location. "We also help them access financial supports such as the Affordable Child Care Benefit, and navigate challenges through consultations, workshops, and referrals."

Kocova says that access to playgroups, parent-child programs, lending libraries, and community-based supports helps reduce barriers, builds confidence, and allows families for feel more connected, informed, and supported as they raise youngsters on the North Shore.

"We'd like parents to know that our programs are free or low-cost, inclusive, and welcoming to all parents, caregivers, and children," says Kocova. "Our sessions are informal, supportive, and designed to meet families where they are, whether they’re expecting a child, navigating early parenthood, or looking for child care and community connections."

Kocova says the February 7 event is just the beginning. "We plan to continue offering events and workshops in the community, and we genuinely want participant input to shape future programming. Families will be invited to share what topics and activities they’d like to see — whether that’s practical training like support for picky eaters, or fun, engaging experiences such as a magician or special family events."
