Locals put best foot forward

An indomitable crew of local walkers and runners joined in this year's national effort to help raise funds to fight Parkinson's Disease.
The Vancouver walk at Stanley Park this past Sunday was just one of 20 across the province and dozens more across the country in support of the Parkinson Society. The Superwalk is the largest fundraiser the Society holds each year, with both in-person and virtual events taking place.
In past years the Lions Bay contingent has participated in Stanley Park, but starting last year, the group completed the run right here in the Village. "We just meet up at 9 a.m. and run for an hour together," said long-time participant Trudi Luethy. "We all then pass our donations on to the Parkinson Society of BC.
About 17,500 people in British Columbia are currently living with Parkinson's disease. Funds raised from the event allow the society to operate its programs and services, expand advocacy efforts and invest in research.
"I don't have enough fingers to count the number of people I know with Parkinson's," said Luethy. "And many of them live here in Lions Bay."
