Sunday accident halts traffic north of Horseshoe Bay

An accident shortly after 7 p.m. stalled Sunday night traffic for hours as emergency crews attended the scene on Highway 99 just north of Horseshoe Bay.
West Vancouver Police reported earlier today that two motorcyclists travelling southbound on the Sea to Sky collided, which caused one of the riders to lose control and collide with a rock wall at the side of the highway. The female motorcyclist was airlifted to hospital where she remains in critical condition.
RCMP Corporal Dave Noon, a forensic collision reconstructionist, reported that the Lower Mainland Integrated Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Service attended the scene. After briefly allowing vehicles trapped in the southbound lane past the accident, traffic was re-routed through Horseshoe Bay to allow crews to assess the scene.
Lions Bay resident Norm Barmeier was held up following the accident when both lanes of the highway were shut down for emergency services. He said he was stopped on the highway for about an hour before the northbound lanes were reopened. "It was a very quiet and ominous energy. People were calm and patient."
Drive BC reported the highway had reopened in both directions by 10:45 p.m. Sunday night.
West Vancouver Police are asking anyone who witnessed the incident or has dashcam footage of the accident to call 604-925-7300 and quote file # 25-8927.
