Village News for March
by Ron McLaughlin

We have enjoyed a very mild winter. A lack of snow and prolonged cold weather made life easier for us, although it may not bode well for later this summer. The cherry trees blossoming at the main entrance to the Village show the welcome move into spring. Daylight savings time is now upon us and with more sunlight there is a fresh energy about and the pace of life is picking up. So much is happening as Lions Bayers begin to enjoy more daylight and better weather.
New neighbours have moved to Upper Oceanview, and others are pending moving to Crosscreek shortly. I look forward to introducing them when I write next.
Sunday February 8 was the Super Bowl, and my beloved Seahawks tromped the opposition to win the championship. It was also next-door neighbour Hugh Crosthwaite’s 80th birthday celebration. Attended by family and friends with a large contingent of the Monday hiking group, it was very festive and full of joy. Hugh spoke eloquently of how lucky he was to be at this stage of his life surrounded by good friends and loved ones. Speaking of loved ones, my eye caught a picture at Hugh and Anne’s home of them on their wedding day in 1973. Happy then, happy now, and they don’t look a day older.

Lions Bay Primary School is on break for another week. I caught up with Vice Principal Jenn Ohlhauser just before the school closed. They have news. The school video has been updated (HERE) which shows our really cute kids and this community jewel. A concert is in the planning stage and is scheduled for early June. An exciting and expensive addition to the playground is coming to fruition, spearheaded by the PAC executive. This enhancement is a collaboration between the playschool, Saplings before- and after-school care, and the PAC. They wanted to demonstrate a big vision, and take on a large project that would be a legacy enjoyed by the community for years to come. Get ready for news of the installation of a large variety of outdoor musical instruments soon. Lastly, on Thursday, April 2, the school will be conducting a full-scale Emergency Student Release Drill as part of their emergency preparedness plan. This simulated drill will provide important feedback on some of the issues that may be encountered in the event of an earthquake or other disaster.

If it is Spring break, and if you are a hockey family, you know what that means. The Provincial playoffs! It is the pinnacle of the season after you have made it through tiering rounds, a gruelling regular season, and competitive playoffs to win your division title. Now you are qualified to play the best in British Columbia for the Provincial pennant. The U-15 West Vancouver Thunder Huskies (HERE) were in the mix and two players come from Lions Bay, forwards Ethan Pappas and Jonathan McLaughlin. Competing against eight other teams from around BC, on Wednesday night they went unbeaten to win their pennant. Congratulations!
A Lions Bay connection goes beyond this win. In 1999 Jonathan’s father, our son Richard’s team won the U-18 pennant. One of his team mates was Julian Stoddart, whose parents Bree and John reside on Isleview. Another team mate was Miles Galland. As fate would have it, our new Director of Operations, Eric Villeneuve, married his sister Lise.
With warmer weather on the horizon, the prospect of new flowers and more daylight bring me great hope. May your Spring season be filled with growth and joy.
