Lions Bay School children to perform at November 11 event

Residents, friends and visitors of all ages are invited to attend next Wednesday's Remembrance Day ceremony and the gathering afterwards.

"Honouring our veterans and what each veteran fought for, our theme once again this year, is ‘Peace’," says co-chair Brenda Broughton.

The Remembrance Day ceremony has taken place every year in the Village on November 11 since it was initiated by then-Mayor Douglas Miller in 2005.

This year the program will feature performances from local pianist Kenneth Broadway, singers Tanya Cosgrave and Wayne Halstrom, Lions Bay Community School children and the Lions Bay Arts Vocal Ensemble, as well as remarks and readings by Mayor Ron McLaughlin, veteran Dr. Ross Brown, Reverend Anne Crosthwait and residents Tony Cox and Cristina Viviani. Lions Bay Public Works member Andrew Smethurst will perform 'Taps' and 'Reveille'.

Wreaths will be placed at the service on behalf of federal MP Patrick Weiler, provincial MLA Jeremy Valeriote, Lions Bay Fire Rescue, Lions Bay Search and Rescue, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and Village veterans.

Refreshments will follow the ceremony, and Broughton says that all residents, visiting neighbours and family are welcome to attend. "The Lions Bay Remembrance Day Ceremony is always very moving, and the visiting afterward is a special highlight."

Broughton and fellow co-chair Trudi Luethy are grateful for the support they have received in putting on this event. "An enormous thank you to our many volunteers who assist with setting up and striking, donating food and preparing the Chevalier ‘Sir’ Norman Kirby Memorial Garden with flowers and knitted poppies."

She also thanks members of Lions Bay Fire Rescue for overseeing parking and accompanying those laying wreaths as they proceed down the aisle, as well as long-time volunteer photographer Marcus Richardson.

The ceremony begins at the Village Hall, 400 Centre Road in Lions Bay, on November 11 at 10:15 a.m.
