Sea to Sky Highway tire rules resume Tuesday

Did you know snow was reported falling on Whistler peaks this weekend? Where did the summer go?
Time for your annual reminder that most major highways in BC have highway winter tire (or chain) requirements every year from October 1 to April 30. Those of us living on the Sea to Sky get an early reprieve, and winter tires can come off March 31.
All non-compliant drivers will be subject to fines beginning on Tuesday. Fines start at $121 for driving without snow tires in a passenger vehicle.
Your tires must display the mountain snowflake symbol seen in the image above on the sidewall, or the M&S insignia. (M&S stands for mud and snow). Tread depth must be a minimum of 3.5 millimetres.
According to the province, summer tires are not permitted for driving on highways from October through April. The RCMP do not consider chains on summer tires as an acceptable substitute for legal winter tires on signed B.C. highways.
Happy — and safe — fall driving!
