This Saturday, settlers and first peoples across the country will join together to celebrate National Indigenous Peoples Day.

First proclaimed in 1996 and given its current name in 2017, June 21 is an opportunity to recognize and celebrate the many diverse cultures and outstanding contributions of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples.

Events to mark the day are happening throughout the Lower Mainland and along the Sea to Sky corridor.

The Squamish Lil’wat Cultural Centre on Blackcomb Way in Whistler has events running throughout the day from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. These include everything from Solstice morning yoga to specialty tours, comedy shows and an artist market. Details HERE.

In West Vancouver at Ambleside Park, free family events begin at 4:30 p.m. and will run until 9 p.m. A celebration of the immeasurable contributions of First Nations peoples will feature cultural sharing of art, music, storytelling, and dance. There are plans for live music all evening featuring Squamish Nation performers and ending with Bitterly Divine, and a salmon dinner cooked over an open fire by Wilfred Baker. Details HERE.

In Vancouver, a family-friendly Indigenous Peoples block party is being held at the Carnegie Community Centre on East Hastings, from noon until 6 p.m. The day will include a welcome from the people of the xwməθkwəy̓əm (Musqueam), Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish), and Səl̓ílwətaʔ (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations, plus performances from Indigenous artists, cultural sharing activities and a Vendor Village. Details HERE.
