Provincial Snap Election "Unnecessary": MLA
We go to the polls in four weeks
Local MLA Jeremy Valeriote expressed concern yesterday after Premier David Eby called a snap provincial election for October 24.
"This is an unnecessary election that undermines important municipal elections already underway, puts government work in the public interest on hold, and seeks only to capitalize on the Opposition’s weakness rather than present a vision for the future of our province," Valeriote told The Watershed.
Eby's election announcement came little more than a day after provincial Conservative Party leader Kerry-Lynne Findlay stepped down from her position at the head of the resignation-plagued party. Over the past few weeks, more than a dozen MLAs have resigned from the party, which still holds the role of official opposition to Eby's New Democrats in the legislature.
"For British Columbians and Canadians, this is an existential moment," Eby said in his announcement, referring to the ongoing trade conflict with the United States. "We need to build a fire break against Trump's economic attack."
Eby said that an election would allow British Columbians to show support for his plan to stand up against Trump.
Echoing BC Green Party leader Emily Lowen's condemnation of the sudden election call, Valeriote called the move "a cynical, over-calculated political manoeuvre that may well backfire."
However, Valeriote said that, despite the circumstances, he "looks forward to running for re-election on the good work I and my team have done over the past two years representing the people of West Van – Sea to Sky."
