Summer-y News

A wedding, new arrivals, Grade Three grads and more

by Ron McLaughlin

Hello Lions Bay. It hasn’t been “Junuary” this year so the recent rainfall is welcome.

On the afternoon of June 7th at Kelvin Grove Beach an intimate wedding took place that joined Matt and Charity. Both have been recruited from Lions Bay Fire Rescue (LBFR) and work at different departments within greater Vancouver. They live in Lions Bay and continue to volunteer with LBFR. After the ceremony the couple enjoyed a honeymoon in Italy. On behalf of all of us, congratulations Matt and Charity!

Chris Babb and his girlfriend Ida, and their 17-month-old daughter Iben will be moving to Crosscreek soon, and joining their new neighbours introduced last month.

They are looking forward to getting settled into the community.

Iben will start at Saplings daycare in Sept 2027 when she’s old enough, and will eventually join the Lions Bay school. Ida works as a lawyer with McLean & Armstrong in Ambleside, and Chris works with Samsung R&D in Vancouver as an engineer.

They are looking forward to participating in community events and the opening of the beach! Welcome new Villagers Chris, Ida, and Iben!

Vice Principal Jenn Ohlhauser advises that the school celebrated the Grade Three students with a farewell ceremony this past week. "Their next venture sees them on the bus as they head off to the big school at Gleneagles," she tells us. "A special thank you goes to the PAC executive and Mrs. Southam who also held a special luncheon for our Grade Threes – we will miss you but wish you all the best as you continue your learning into Grade Four and beyond!"

The parents and teachers at the school will also be saying goodbye to Jill Fujibayashi who is retiring from her role as School Parent Advisory Committee (PAC) Chair. Jill has held this role since 2016, a full 10 years of sustained volunteer commitment. She is a relentless organizer and a fixture at the school, consistently planning, leading, and executing on tasks big and small. Jill originated and maintains many of the beloved community traditions, most notably “Cider with Santa”, movie nights, and the pancake breakfast that bring together school families and Villagers of all ages, strengthening community bonds well beyond the school walls.

Jill's accomplishments were formally acknowledged on Canada Day when she was named the 'Citizen of the Year'. Congratulations, Jill and thank you for all you have done for our community.

Summer is finally here. It’s a season that invites us to relax, recharge, and embrace the warmth of the sun. What better place to enjoy it than here in Lions Bay?
